Travel schedule

Treat yourself to this yoga trip to tropical Zanzibar. In cooperation with yoga school Spirit of Yoga, we are organizing a fully catered yoga retreat in the first week of February 2023 (2-9 February). You enjoy yoga (vinyasa and yin), massage, singing bowl sessions and healthy snacks and drinks. But of course you also visit the highlights of Zanzibar with us: a spice tour, Stone Town and a dhow cruise.

Zanzibar

You depart from Schiphol on 02 February 2023 and arrive on Zanzibar in the evening. Here you will be met by our colleague, who will take you to your accommodation on the southwest coast of Zanzibar. An atmospheric African paradise with houses in ecological style.

At this spot on the azure blue Indian Ocean you can immediately relax completely. The next day you start with your first (vinyasa) yoga class. After a shared breakfast you can use all facilities of the resort, such as the spa and the infinity pool. But you can also swim, snorkel, relax in the hammock or take a walk through the (fishing) village next to the resort … just take a look. A little later in the day there will be another (yin) yoga session.

Stone Town

Today, after yoga and breakfast, you will leave for the historic town of Stone Town, where you will be met by a guide who will show you everyday life in Stone Town, and inform you about its history and architecture.

The tour in Stone Town starts with a coffee at Jaws Corner on the barazas (benches attached to the building) surrounded by men playing bao (traditional board game). At Darajani Market, you can see what’s really going on, behind the scenes. Not far from Darajani is the Malindi dhow port, where most goods, potatoes, tomatoes and rice, for example, enter the island via dhows from the mainland.

After lunch there is every opportunity to walk back to that nice cafe or shop that you had just seen …

Spice tour

After yoga and breakfast you will leave together for the authentic spice farm of the Abeids family.

The spice tour teaches you about tropical fruits, spices and rare plant species. Depending on the season, we will see and taste vanilla, cardamom, cinnamon, nutmeg, turmeric, lemongrass, cloves, ylang-ylang, cumin, garlic, ginger, coriander, pepper, tamarind, chili, oregano and many others. You will hear all about the properties and origin of each spice, and their use as medicine or in food and drink. Make sure to smell and taste everything!

Before driving back, enjoy a farm lunch, cooked by the women in the family using products from their farm.

Sunset Cruise

We conclude this last evening at the resort with a very special experience. During the afternoon, you walk to the beach and board a beautifully restored traditional dhow.

With the wind in the sails and a cold drink in your hand, you cruise around the gold-clad sea. A red sun, the horizon and the beautiful features of the wooden dhow provide perfect photo opportunities.

Enjoy a seafood BBQ on a deserted beach. Swimming is allowed.

Zanzibar - Amsterdam

Today is the last yoga class with a view of the azure blue Indian Ocean.

You can spend this morning completely according to your wishes at this wonderful accommodation where you can enjoy the beautiful location, the sea and the swimming pool.

In the afternoon you will be transferred to the airport near Stone Town – the Abeid Amani Karumi Airport – for the flight back to Amsterdam where you will arrive the next morning.

Yoga & massages

Yoga
An alternation of Vinyasa yoga, 1x daily, and Yin yoga, 1x daily.

Vinyasa yoga is an active yoga form with breath-synchronized movements. Vinyasa is naturally Yang – firm, active and muscle-oriented. Because everything in life consists of the right balance, we combine Vinyasa with Yin.

Yin yoga is a gentle, slow, meditative form of yoga, in which the connective tissue is touched. It is the receptive and more energetic side of yoga.

Meditation
We use breathing exercises to land, connect with our feelings, expand the mind and relax the nervous system. Then you are invited to deepen this state of ‘presence’ in the meditation that follows. A great opportunity to go deeper into yourself and to be present without judgment with what presents itself.

Singing Bowl Healing
In addition to the yoga classes and meditation, you will also receive a singing bowl healing with Tibetan singing bowls. The body is made up of more than 70% water. Water is a medium that easily resonates with sounds. But not only the water in our body vibrates, the metals stored in our body fluids also vibrate harmoniously with the long-lasting tones of the singing bowls. The sounds of the bowls loosen, arrange and harmonize at the same time. Essentially what is happening is the transformation of energy. Hence also the relaxed feeling during and after a singing bowl healing.

Massages
Also included is 1 massage per person of your choice: a relaxation massage, a connective tissue massage or a cupping massage. Every massage is different, because it is really tailored to you. This means that, in consultation, a combination is also possible.

Relaxation massage:
During a relaxation massage, you massage with light (ironing) movements. Get out of you head and in your body. A relaxation massage works in principle to lower blood pressure, it relieves stress.

Some other beneficial effects are:

  • good blood circulation,
  • the removal of waste products in the muscles and excess fluid in the tissues,
  • release of oxytocin and endorphins (happiness hormones),
  • the metabolism in the cells is improved,
  • the immune system is strengthened,
  • heat development in the body,
  • increase in tension of weakened muscles,
  • let tense muscles relax.

Connective tissue massage:
Connective tissue surrounds muscle groups, muscle bundles and between muscle fibers. The moment this tissue sticks together (so-called adhesions), movements in the muscle and therefore in restricts the body, which can lead to complaints. During a connective tissue massage,
the adhesions massaged loose. Collagen and elastin fibers are also activated. It makes so the skin is smoother, more resilient, but also firmer and tighter.

Cup:
This is a beautiful Eastern suction technique. Cups are placed on an (oiled) skin and pushed the body. The skin and adhesions are sucked loose, the blood flow is reduced highly stimulated and toxins are brought to the surface from the deeper layers tissues.
Due to the good blood circulation, the connective tissue will become softer and more elastic and will muscle knots much easier to solve. Because waste is drawn to the surface they can be broken down more easily by the body and/or removed through the skin.

Bianca & Nathalie

Both yoga instructors, Bianca and Nathalie, have a lot of experience and are very passionate in their profession. They like to tell briefly about their passion.

Bianca Visser
“After my first yoga experience I immediately thought “I want to know more about this!”
It felt so good for my body and mind after the first lesson. It felt magical to me.
Then I started my first training in 2007, after which several more courses followed. I teach vinyasa flow, hatha and yin yoga, but mainly adjust what my students need. I have had my own studio in Apeldoorn for 13 years now. I am also a certified masseuse and have specialized in connective tissue massage and cupping!
I incorporate breathing exercises, meditation, yoga nidra and philosophy in my classes!
For me yoga is a lifestyle!
My wish is to reach as many people as possible with this way of living, to get so much more out of our existence.”

Nathalie Reinegger
“I started yoga as a back patient. Yoga has taught me to feel what my body needs. Sometimes this means taking a step back for me, sometimes this means not giving up and persevering. By practicing yoga and mindfulness I experienced that our emotional, mental as well as our physical healing and well-being starts with ourselves, now and not later. This has helped me to free myself from this stamp!

Yoga is challenging, strengthening, but also nourishing and soothing. The perfect combination to find balance in yourself and to get to your feeling; to come home; restore and strengthen the connection with your inner world. And from this place we automatically connect with everything around us; with mother earth. This is how we learn to live fully again!

To be able to support people even more on their path, and of course also myself, I continued to learn after my yoga training and so I now also work with singing bowls, as a sound healer, and as a masseur.”
