The atmospheric Emerson on Hurumzi hotel is located in the heart of historic Stone Town.

This beautifully restored hotel is the second tallest building in Stone Town and, together with the minarets and towers, forms an integral part of the Stone Town skyline.

The ten rooms Emerson on Hurumzi are all different, but each one beautifully decorated.

The popular ‘Tea House’ rooftop restaurant is open for lunch and dinner and offers beautiful views of Stone Town and the Indian Ocean.

Overview

Emerson on Hurumzi was once the home of one of the richest men in the Swahili empire, Mr. Tharia Topan. He was the main financial advisor to Sultan Bargash and also head of customs in Zanzibar. The house was built in 1870 at a location and height from which Mr. Topan had a clear view of the ocean, to see his ships and precious cargo arrive in the nearby port of Malindi.
