Self-drive opties

There are multiple opportunities for a self-drive safari in Tanzania

4WD

You can choose from the following types of cars for your safari throughout Northern Tanzania, including the Serengeti National Park and Lake Natron:

Land Rover Defender, a robust 4WD, with roof and/or ground tent, suitable for a maximum of 4 people with camping gear and luggage.

Toyota Hilux 2.8 GD 6, a modern and luxurious 4WD, with roof tent, suitable for a maximum of 2 adults (and possibly a small child on a bench) with camping gear and luggage.

Both types of 4WD have tubeless tires for reduced vulnerability. If you don’t have a roof tent, you have an open / pop-up roof.

Please note:

  • You must have sufficient driving experience and an international driver’s license.
  • Before you leave you will receive a mini Bush training, adapted to your skills.
  • You navigate with a GPS with Track4Africa and/or the app from maps.me from your own mobile phone and a local SIM card.
  • Driving in the dark is not allowed.
  • It must be clear in advance on which days you want to be in which National Park, so that the permits can also be arranged in advance. That is no longer possible on the spot.
  • The camping spot(s) in the National Park must also be paid in advance.
  • There is no toilet in the car (so be careful, shine around with a flashlight).
  • Self-driving = independent travel. That means having confidence in the vehicle (knowing something about mechanics) and understanding and respecting the local culture.

Tip:

  • If you have no experience with self-drive yet, book a weekend off the road in the your home country first.
  • Travel with soft luggage bags so that they are easy to store.
